Marja Acres will transform an underutilized property into an intergenerational, accessible, mixed-use community with market-rate and on-site affordable housing. The site formerly consisted of a chicken farm and country store, which became a gathering place for locals.

NUWI proposed a project that was a result of community collaboration, redesigning the land into a gathering space that serves people of all ages and life stages, while providing much needed housing, neighborhood retail, and open space. The Carlsbad City Council unanimously approved the project in 2020, which broke ground in 2022.

UNIQUE PROJECT FEATURES

1.2 acre open space, publicly accessible parks, a professionally operated urban farm and a dog park

10,000 SF of retail, including a 4,000 SF farm-to-table restaurant and
6,000 SF neighborhood-serving shops

Incorporated free and subsidized transit passes for residents to encourage use of transportation; particularly beneficial for the senior community

“It’s part of my job to work with urban developers, and its companies like New Urban West that create an exciting cityscape. They worked hard with my office, the City Council, and other government and community groups to achieve a project which they and the City will be proud of. They’re good business partners.”
